Desktop Replacement Plan

Service Description:
Alamo Colleges has initiated a cyclic technology replacement plan known as Desktop Replacement Plan.  The San Antonio College Office of Technology Services (OTS) provides a Desktop Replacement Plan (DRP) for Faculty, Staff and Student Labs. The purpose of the DRP program is to ensure that each participant has a workstation and OTS anticipates the replacement of all desktop computer workstations once within a five year target cycle.  Each replacement will have up to date technology to satisfy daily job duties, curriculum and coursework related tasks with standard configuration and software.  Funding for Faculty workstations is provided by the District Information Technology Services Department.  Funding for Staff and Student Lab workstations is provided by San Antonio College.

Objectives/Goals
The objective and goal of the DRP is to ensure computing resources at San Antonio College are current and adequate for performing all tasks.  Furthermore, this plan will allow the college to achieve the following:
  • Centralize resource and financial planning and forecast the funding requirements to implement a five year replacement cycle for workstations.
  • Ensure that all faculty, staff & students who use computing resources will have access to a primary computer with sufficient capability to support basic computing needs to fulfill their responsibilities.
  • Streamline the specification, acquisition, and deployment of new equipment.
  • Assure that appropriate computing resources are available for all college faculty, staff and students whether they reside in offices, classrooms, labs or other to support the mission of the college.
  • Implement minimum standards for computing equipment, as deemed appropriate by the Alamo Colleges Equipment Standards Committee and San Antonio College to promote uniformity of technology levels across the campus.
  • Ease resource and financial planning by reducing the effort involved in departmental budgeting and planning for new workstations.
  • Provide for the cost effective and timely purchasing and installation of new equipment while decreasing the deployment time for new equipment.
  • Replace all computer peripherals to energy efficient equipment to maximize energy savings, understanding that there will be a few exceptions based upon needs.
  • Expedite the re-deployment or disposal of old equipment.
Installation Process
OTS Technical Support Services will set up specific installation dates with each department to make the process as seamless as possible.
